
Karina Mross

Dr. Karina Mross is a political scientist and works in the department ‘Transformation of Political (Dis)Order: Institutions, Values and Peace’ at the German Institute of Development and Sustainability (IDOS) in Bonn. Karina joined IDOS in 2013 and has since worked on projects on ‘Transformation and Development in Fragile States’, ‘Promoting Peace Sustainably’, ‘Social Cohesion in Africa’ and ‘Polarization and Autocratization’.
In her research, she examines the role of political institutions and transition processes for peace and social cohesion in conflict-affected contexts. Her research focuses on international support (peace and democracy promotion). Ongoing research deals with the relationship between autocratization and political violence, the role of local elections for social peace and transitional justice in post-conflict situations. She has conducted field research in Burundi, Liberia, Mozambique, Nepal and Timor-Leste. In addition to qualitative methods, Karina uses Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA) and quantitative methods. Based on her research, she is active in policy consulting.
Karina received her PhD from the University of St. Gallen in 2019. She completed her Master’s degree in International Relations and Development Policy at the University of Duisburg–Essen and her Bachelor’s degree in European Studies at Maastricht University.
