
Julia Bader
EDP Network Member
Julia is Associate Professor at the Department of Political Science at the University of Amsterdam (UvA). Before joining the UvA in 2012 and the Amsterdam Institute for Social Science Research (AISSR) in 2012, Julia worked as a research fellow at the German Institute of Development and Sustainability (IDOS) in Bonn. She holds a Master of Arts in Politics and Management from the University of Konstanz and a PhD in Political Science from the University of Heidelberg.
Julia’s research interests lie at the intersection of international relations and comparative regime studies, focusing on the foreign relations of authoritarian regimes. In particular, she examines China’s role in international relations, as well as China’s influence on authoritarianism and democracy in third countries. In addition, Julia is particularly interested in the international network of the Chinese Communist Party.
Julia is currently also working on the topic of soft power in authoritarian countries. Julia Bader is co-director of the Political Economy and Transnational Governance research group at the AISSR. Besides the EDP network, she is a member of the network “International Diffusion and Cooperation of Authoritarian Regimes (IDCAR)” and was an external partner of the project “Undermining Hegemony. The US, China, Russia, and International Public Goods.
