Network members will attend DVPW Conference in Tübingen (March 15-17, 2017)

Four network members will attend the bi-annual DVPW Section “Comparative Politics” Conference on March 15 to 17, 2017. The conference themed “Unlike Twins?! Comparing Democracies and Autocracies” will be held at the Institute of Political Science, Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen. Julia, together with Anna Lührmann from the V-Dem Institute at the University of Gothenburg, has organized a panel on the comparison of autocracy and democracy promotion („Same, Same but Different? Comparing the International Promotion of Democracy and Autocracy”). In this panel, Julia and Tina will present a paper on democratic and societal values in democracy promotion (“Democracy Promotion Needs Democrats: How Societal Values Matter”).

In another panel, Solveig speaks about the competition between power and money in transition countries (“Competing for Power and Money. State Capture and Limited Political Competition in Transition Countries”), while Jonas will focus on civil society restrictions (“Justifying Civic Space Restrictions: Does Regime Type Matter?”). Julia will also speak about the sometimes conflicting objectives of democratization and state building (“Eroding Democracy by Building the State: A Comparative Analysis of Mozambique”).
