
Tainá Siman

Tainá Siman has been a research associate and PhD Student at the International Relations Department of the Free University of Berlin since May 2024. She is working on the DFG-funded project “Performances of Forest Governance in Regional Regimes. A Comprehensive Comparative Analysis” (since October 2023). In her doctoral research, she is taking a comparative approach to the reasons for the use of democracy clauses by regional organizations.
Previously, she was a research intern at the UNU CRIS (United Nations University Institute on Comparative Regional Integration Studies) in the Regions and Cities Governance Lab (Re-LAB) cluster, supervised by Frank Mattheis. She has also concluded a Weiterbildender Studiengang in Development, Public Policy and Regional Integration at the Latin American Faculty of Social Sciences (FLACSO Argentina).
She studied International Relations at the State University of Rio de Janeiro and wrote her master’s thesis on the strategies of non-traditional actors to interfere and influence decision-making in Mercosur. Her previous experiences include a semester of academic mobility at the Universitat Autónoma de Barcelona during her bachelor’s degree at the Pontifical Catholic University of Minas Gerais, which was completed with a bachelor’s research scholarship on the COMESA-SADC-EAC free trade agreement, funded by FAPEMIG (Minas Gerais Research Foundation).
Her main lines of research include the adoption and use of democratic norms by regional organizations comparatively, as well as the reduction of democratic deficit through the adoption of institutional mechanisms of participation in regional organizations.
She is also a member of GRIDALE (Grupo de Reflexión sobre Integración y Desarollo em América Latina y Europa) and the Regionalism Observatory (São Paulo, Brazil).
