Brigitte (Britta) Weiffen is Senior Lecturer in Comparative Politics at the Department of Politics and International Studies, The Open University, Milton Keynes, United Kingdom. Brigitte’s research is located at the intersection of comparative politics, international relations and area studies, with a particular focus on Latin America. Her research agenda has included democratization and the crisis of democracy, human rights and transitional justice, regional integration and regional security. Current research projects address the crisis of regionalism, the rise of populism, and obstacles to the protection of democracy by regional organizations.

Before joining the Open University, Brigitte held the Martius Chair for German and European Studies, a visiting professorship sponsored by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), at the Department of Political Science, University of São Paulo (USP), Brazil (2015-2020). She was also a Visiting Professor at the Institute of International Relations at USP (2014-2015), a Lecturer at the University of Konstanz (2008-2014), and a Research Associate at University of Tübingen (2005-2008) and University of Bonn (2001-2005). Brigitte received her PhD in Political Science from the University of Tübingen and her M.A. in Political Science from the University of Bonn. Her doctoral dissertation Entstehungsbedingungen von Demokratien. Interne und externe Einflüsse im Vergleich won the Best PhD Thesis Award of the German Political Science Association (DVPW) in 2010.
